In February, I ate a liar for the first time.

That was my sentence in Darija class earlier this week.  Turns out, "liar" and "liver" are almost the same word.  Laughs ensued.

Also, it turns out, I'm not crazy about turkey liver.

I also told my host mother that Pete was "bathing our bedroom."  Surprisingly, the incorrect word choice didn't seem to shock her as much as the fact that my husband, a man, was cleaning.

These stories are a sampling of our life right now.  We make a lot of mistakes, we try really hard, and we are constantly learning: language, culture, and how to take a bucket bath in the most efficient way.  We feel so lucky to live with such a loving, hospitable host family during these crazy first few weeks in Morocco.  The are incredibly patient with us.  And they feed us.  SO. WELL.

Here are some pics of our small-town life.  We mostly just go to school, eat a lot, and study.  Last weekend, Pete played soccer with some of the guys (check out the view!):

Here is mlwi, a super delicious bread we eat sometimes for kas-krut (snack, around 5-6pm).  It is DELICIOUS, sort of like a pancake but not really at all.  As you can probably tell from our excited faces--- this is me with a fellow Peace Corps trainee who lives above us--- we love this stuff.  We usually eat until we are sick, and then try to make room in our stomach for dinner around 8 or 9 pm.

Pete was allowed into the kitchen to take this photo, but otherwise he isn't permitted in here.  If he tries to help clear the table or offers to assist with dishes, he is quickly sent out with a laugh.  I, on the other hand, am getting very good at washing dishes and touching things I would normally use a rubber glove to touch.

This weekend, we had a chance to go to Fes for one night.  We had a lot of fun exploring the medina.  We took a cooking class at our little riad (like a bed and breakfast, sort of) and met people from all over the world. We also bumped into almost every other Peace Corps volunteer from our cohort as everyone escaped to Fes for the free weekend.  It was fun to see so many familiar faces!  Come visit us, and we can all get lost in the medina together.

Our internet at home is very spotty, and we also don't have much free time (when we aren't in school, our lovely host cousins come over and help us study.  Or we are eating).  So, we apologize if we are slow to respond to emails or update the blog.  But, please know that we are so grateful for all of your support and words of encouragement.  We couldn't do it without you.

  1. If your free time is spent eating, how could we possibly need an apology?

  2. I spent the afternoon sharing a table on campus with the Islamic Community Center, admiring their abilities to write everyone's name in Arabic and thinking of you all. We also talked about wanting to travel to Morocco and met someone from there. Mostly I spent an afternoon thinking of what your life is like there and sending you warmth as I was getting a sun burn. Love and hugs!
